Origin
Donn Beach · Don the Beachcomber, Hollywood · 1934
Beach guarded the recipe so jealously that the original was lost for decades; reconstructed and published by Jeff 'Beachbum' Berry in his 2007 Sippin' Safari. Don the Beachcomber bars famously limited customers to two per visit.
Don the Beachcomber's 1934 secret — three rums, citrus, and spice in a deceptively dangerous tropical bomb.
Ingredients
- 1½ oz White Rum
- 1½ oz Dark Rum (Jamaican)
- 1 oz Overproof Rum (Lemon Hart 151)
- ¾ oz fresh Lime juice
- ½ oz fresh Grapefruit juice
- ½ oz Falernum
- ½ oz Cinnamon Syrup
- 1 tsp Grenadine
- 6 drops Absinthe
- 1 dash Angostura Bitters
Instructions
- Add all ingredients except the absinthe to a blender with 6 oz crushed ice.
- Flash blend for 5 seconds — just enough to unite, not liquefy.
- Pour unstrained into a tall hurricane or tiki mug.
- Float the absinthe drops on top last.
- Garnish with a mint sprig.
Tips
- This is Beachbum Berry's reverse-engineered Don spec — accept no shortcuts on the three-rum split.
- Limit yourself to two. The original menu actually said so.
