Hurricane GlassFlash blend

Origin

Donn Beach · Don the Beachcomber, Hollywood · 1934

Beach guarded the recipe so jealously that the original was lost for decades; reconstructed and published by Jeff 'Beachbum' Berry in his 2007 Sippin' Safari. Don the Beachcomber bars famously limited customers to two per visit.

Don the Beachcomber's 1934 secret — three rums, citrus, and spice in a deceptively dangerous tropical bomb.

Ingredients

  • 1½ oz White Rum
  • 1½ oz Dark Rum (Jamaican)
  • 1 oz Overproof Rum (Lemon Hart 151)
  • ¾ oz fresh Lime juice
  • ½ oz fresh Grapefruit juice
  • ½ oz Falernum
  • ½ oz Cinnamon Syrup
  • 1 tsp Grenadine
  • 6 drops Absinthe
  • 1 dash Angostura Bitters

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients except the absinthe to a blender with 6 oz crushed ice.
  2. Flash blend for 5 seconds — just enough to unite, not liquefy.
  3. Pour unstrained into a tall hurricane or tiki mug.
  4. Float the absinthe drops on top last.
  5. Garnish with a mint sprig.

Tips

  • This is Beachbum Berry's reverse-engineered Don spec — accept no shortcuts on the three-rum split.
  • Limit yourself to two. The original menu actually said so.
