Tequila Sunrise
HighballBuild & sink
Origin
Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice · Trident, Sausalito · 1971
Modern grenadine-and-OJ version created at the Trident in the early 1970s; popularized after Mick Jagger drank one there in June 1972, inspiring the Eagles' 1973 song. An earlier, unrelated Tequila Sunrise (with crème de cassis) appears in 1930s Arizona.
A layered showstopper — bright, fruity, and beautiful.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Tequila
- 4 oz Orange Juice
- ½ oz Grenadine
Instructions
- Fill a tall glass with ice.
- Add tequila and orange juice, stir gently.
- Slowly pour grenadine down the inside of the glass — it will sink and create the sunrise effect.
- Garnish with an orange slice and cherry.
Tips
- Don't stir after adding grenadine — the layered look is the point.
- Use freshly squeezed OJ for a huge improvement.
