Origin

Created by Egyptian-Italian bartender Scialom as a hangover cure for British and Allied troops fighting Rommel's North Africa campaign; legend says a telegram requested gallons be shipped to the front lines.

Joe Scialom's 1942 hangover cure from Cairo's Shepheard Hotel — gin, cognac, and ginger beer over ice.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Gin
  • 1 oz Cognac
  • ½ oz fresh Lime juice
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 4 oz Ginger Beer
  • Mint sprig

Instructions

  1. Combine gin, cognac, lime juice, and bitters in a shaker with ice.
  2. Shake briefly to chill and combine.
  3. Strain into a highball or copper mug filled with fresh ice.
  4. Top with cold ginger beer and stir once gently.
  5. Garnish with a mint sprig and an orange wheel.

Tips

  • A spicy, dry ginger beer (Fever-Tree, Fentimans) outperforms sweeter brands.
  • Equal parts gin and cognac is the original — don't tilt either way.
