Origin

Created by Egyptian-Italian bartender Scialom as a hangover cure for British and Allied troops fighting Rommel's North Africa campaign; legend says a telegram requested gallons be shipped to the front lines.
Joe Scialom's 1942 hangover cure from Cairo's Shepheard Hotel — gin, cognac, and ginger beer over ice.
Ingredients
- 1 oz Gin
- 1 oz Cognac
- ½ oz fresh Lime juice
- 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
- 4 oz Ginger Beer
- Mint sprig
Instructions
- Combine gin, cognac, lime juice, and bitters in a shaker with ice.
- Shake briefly to chill and combine.
- Strain into a highball or copper mug filled with fresh ice.
- Top with cold ginger beer and stir once gently.
- Garnish with a mint sprig and an orange wheel.
Tips
- A spicy, dry ginger beer (Fever-Tree, Fentimans) outperforms sweeter brands.
- Equal parts gin and cognac is the original — don't tilt either way.
