- 1.5 oz Reposado Tequila
- 0.5 oz Mezcal
- 1 tsp Agave Syrup
- 2 dashes Mole Bitters
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice.
- Stir for 20–30 seconds until well chilled.
- Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube.
- Express an orange peel over the glass, then carefully flame it by holding a match between the peel and the glass while squeezing.
- Drop the peel into the glass.
Tips
- A reposado adds depth without overpowering the mezcal.
- Mole bitters bring chocolate and chile notes that complement the agave.
Notes
Phil Ward developed the Oaxaca Old Fashioned at Death & Co in NYC in 2007. It introduced mezcal to a generation of cocktail drinkers and became the template for split-base agave cocktails.
