Tipple

Division Bell

CoupeShake
Built with: Mezcal · Aperol · Maraschino Liqueur · Lime

Origin

Phil Ward · Mayahuel, NYC · 2008

A mezcal-forward sour with Aperol and maraschino — bittersweet and a little smoky.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Mezcal
  • 0.75 oz Aperol
  • 0.5 oz Maraschino Liqueur
  • 0.75 oz fresh Lime juice

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice.
  2. Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds.
  3. Fine-strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  4. Garnish with a grapefruit twist, optional.

Tips

  • Maraschino is sweet and aromatic — the half-ounce here is intentional.
  • A grassy mezcal lets the Aperol read; a heavily smoked one will take over.

Notes

Phil Ward built the Division Bell at Mayahuel in NYC in 2008, layering mezcal over the Last Word's herbal-and-citrus backbone.
