Cuba Libre
Origin
Havana · 1900
Cuban folk cocktail; according to a notarized 1965 affidavit by Bacardi exec Fausto Rodriguez, first poured in a Havana bar in August 1900 when a US Army Signal Corps captain mixed Bacardi with newly imported Coca-Cola and toasted '¡Por Cuba libre!'. No single bartender is credited.
More than rum and Coke — the lime makes all the difference.
Ingredients
- 2 oz White Rum
- 4 oz Cola
- ½ Lime
Instructions
- Squeeze lime into a tall glass and drop the shell in.
- Fill with ice.
- Add rum, then top with cola.
- Stir gently.
Tips
- The lime is not optional — it's what separates this from a rum and Coke.
- Use Mexican Coke (cane sugar) if you can find it.
