Caipirinha
Origin
Brazilian folk cocktail with no single inventor; emerged in 19th-century São Paulo state (Piracicaba region), variously credited to sugarcane farmers and to a folk Spanish-flu remedy of cachaça, lime, garlic and honey. Declared Brazilian Cultural Heritage in 2003.
Brazil's national cocktail — simple, punchy, and full of lime.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Cachaça
- 1 Lime, cut into wedges
- 2 tsp Sugar
Instructions
- Place lime wedges and sugar in a rocks glass.
- Muddle firmly to release the juice and oils.
- Fill with crushed ice.
- Add cachaça and stir well.
Tips
- Use a sturdy glass — you're muddling directly in it.
- Don't substitute rum for cachaça — it's a different spirit entirely.
