Origin

1922

Named after Rudolph Valentino's 1922 bullfighter film of the same name; first known recipe appears in Harry Craddock's Savoy Cocktail Book (1930). The original creator is undocumented.

A 1922 classic named for the Rudolph Valentino bullfighter film — fruity, smoky, and unexpected.

Ingredients

  • ¾ oz Scotch
  • ¾ oz Cherry Heering
  • ¾ oz Sweet Vermouth
  • ¾ oz fresh Orange juice

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice.
  2. Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  4. Garnish with an orange twist or a cherry.

Tips

  • Equal parts is the canonical recipe — adjust scotch up slightly for more backbone.
  • Cherry Heering is essential; generic cherry liqueur is too sweet.
